This is a collaborative blog, created through the joint efforts of readers who enjoy the works of Émile Zola. We hope to gather information about his works in one place for quick and easy reference, and we welcome contributions from other enthusiasts.
To access the commentaries that we currently have, visit the Index of Works page (see the menu) where there are links to follow under the title of the work.
Also visit our sister site La Comedie Humaine which is a resource for readers of Honoré de Balzac, and our new site celebrating the author Guy de Maupassant.
Subscribe to receive notifications of new posts to this site (e.g. new commentaries etc.) as they are published.
This blog is the brainchild of Lisa Hill from ANZ LitLovers in Australia and Dagny a.k.a Madame Vauquer from the Vauquer Boarding House. Other contributors are Guy Savage from His Futile Preoccupations; and Emma, a native French speaker, who reads Zola in the original French, but blogs in English at Book Around the Corner. Nancy also blogs at Silver Season; and Jonathan at Intermittencies of the Mind while Rachel blogs at Bookishly Witty, Karen at Booker Talk, and Tony at Tony’s Book World.
And what about you? If you have suggestions, corrections, additional information, or commentaries, summaries or excerpts on your own website that you would like to share, please use the contact form below. We would also welcome contributions recommending the best translations.
Please note that when you use the Contact form, your comment goes to the administrators of this website by email, and will not be published. It is really intended only for people who want to contribute some content to the site. So if you want to start or join a conversation, Please use the Leave a Reply form at the bottom of the post.

I have got a quick question – do we have a facebook page for this blog? It would certainly be a good idea to have one so that we can have all the fans under one roof? There are lots of Zola fans out there but since there isn’t much promotion he seems a bit obscured not compare to other writers which is a bit of a shame..

Hello Jeremy, ah, no, we don’t. Speaking only for myself, the less I have to do with Facebook the happier I am, and I would not want to have the responsibility of having to monitor it, moderate it and respond to comments. But if other members of the group that created this want to do it, that’s up to them.
I do think it would be good if the Wikipedia page about Zola included mention of this blog, but that’s for someone else to do. (You cannot add info about your own activities to WP, someone has to do it for you).

Alas, my feelings about Facebook are the same as Lisa’s.

I have added a link on wiki ! Let me know if you’d like to add other pages. Love to get involved. inhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_Zola#See_also.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_Zola#See_also
Completely understand its a hassle managing a fb page -I do think there’s a genuine need to publicise this blog / other resources on fb tho as it has such a user base plus the info there at the moment is subpar. I’ve just joined The Emile Zola Society (UK) recently and this seems like a real issue too- a lot of good work has been done but people are not aware which is a shame.
